The head Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger is back. She released her debut solo album 'Killer Love' in March in UK and it charted fairly high at a respectable number 8. The album is packed full of club bangers and smooth slow jams, what Nicole does best.
This isn't the first time Nicole has released solo material. Back in 2007 Nicole was planning to release her debut album, then named 'Her Name Is Nicole'. The album never hit the selves and some speculated that Nicole had given up on her solo career and had chosen to remain in the saftey of successful pop group The Pussycat Dolls. The album was never released no, but Nicole did release some singles however. The album's lead single in the US was the T.I. assisted 'Whatever U Like'. The song failed to impact on the Billboard Chart and a worldwide release was then cancelled. Nicole released her first worldwide single, 'Baby Love' which was produced by Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am. The song made several appearances on global charts, reaching #14 in the UK and #5 in Germany but still, Nicole was not happy with her attempts and cancelled the album's release.
'Killer Love' opens with pumping RedOne produced 'Posion'. The song is a complete club banger and Nicole presents her belting vocals well over the RedOne beat. The song charted at #3 in the UK and made waves in the rest of Europe. Nicole's next single 'Don't Hold Your Breath' is another one for the clubs but also has a ballady feel. It became Nicole's highest charting single, debuting at #1 in the UK and charted well in the rest of Europe and Australia.
The first half of the album seems to be completely full of fast paced, radio friendly club songs. Not a bad thing in my book. By far the highlight of the album is a track called 'Wet'. The song is produced by super producers Stargate who also produced hits for Rihanna (Only Girl, What's My Name, S&M). The song is a beat frenzy and has a sing along shout chorus that will make you take charge of the dancefloor. Nicole's vocals shimmer as she sings across the beat.
Other songs for the clubs include RedOne produced, 'Killer Love', 'Club Banger Nation' and 'Say Yes'. All three packed with beats, bass and big fat melodies.
Nicole plans to release 'Right there' as the third single off the album (first in the US). The songs is a reggae influenced mid-tempo jam packed with big pop hooks and and a big chorus. The album version does not feature rapper 50 cent but that does not take away the goodness of the track. Nicole's vocals again shine on the song, her big voice provides us with delight for our ears and the beat compliments her tone well.
The second half of the album is filled with more slow, ballad type songs that really show off Nicole's vocal ability. 'AmenJena' is the album's finishing track and Nicole whispers and shouts across the piano played backing track that would give most goosebumps. Other highlights of the ballad side of the album include 'Heartbeat' featuring Enrique Iglesias. The version that appears on Enrique's album is a bit lighter than Nicole's version but her version is a bass filled stomper that will have couples everywhere report to the bedroom.
All in all the album is an amazing first attempt for Nicole. Some real club hits and some real slow jams that will have everyone pleased.
Stand out tracks: 'Wet', 'Right There' and 'Heartbeat'.
